A complex story with some fascinating true-life characters raises this documentary above some pretty cheesy and pretentious stylistic flourishes. Whatever your opinion of these people and their music (I found them to be pompous losers, but incredibly interesting for that reason) the subcultural movements and controversy they spawned is incredibly compelling, especially interesting when they're forced to look back on it years later.
