Diane Lane is phenomenal in this film. Her sympathetic and honest portrayal of a woman tempted into an affair is heartbreaking. Everytime I watch this film I notice a new facet of her subtle performance that leaves me amazed.
She is one of most talented actresses working today. This film is one of the few in which she is able to showcase such an immense talent. It is especially nice to see no justification in the film for her adultery.
People do not have to have a tragic backstory in order to make mistakes; human fallibility is not that tidy.
