Review of True Legend (2010) by Pendo W — 16 May 2010
True Legend consists of another folk story based on the Beggar So tales. It adopts the classic formula techniques in most martial arts movies (e.g. Shaw Bros films) with betrayal, training, revenge, and redemption.
All the fast paced style of Yuen Woo Ping's direction is a great reminiscent but at least the drama doesn't drag it down way too much which might have interfered with the action. Everything looked captivating, which is until the climax took a huge unnecessary turn and just affected the film drastically and became pointless yet exciting.
It's the supporting kung fu actors and a surprising cameo weren't utilized completely and felt like their time wasn't handled properly. Could the writing of the film have done a much better job, indeed.
But the action was relentless, which thank goodness wasn't a total mess.
