Review of Tokyo Sonata (2008) by Gregg H — 19 Apr 2009
This is a good reflexion movie about actual/past decades society in japan. The portrait of the family is really simple but subtile, cold but realistic. I must admit that I like the japanese way of life because this is very different from the occidental one, but we see they have similar things in their life (unemployment, piano, robbery.
...). Even if the whole movie is sad (the family got problems right at the first minutes!), we could feel that the end would be a good end, and hopefully we havent got a lot of cliches during the movie because I find japanese humour both more simple and subtile.
In the same feeling, I recommend to watch Kikujiro from Takeshi Kitano (which got more happy moments). Back to Tokyo Sonata, I must say that the piano part (end of the movie) is awesome (and this is not an ultra classical music fan speaking).
