Review of Timbuktu (2014) by Amilcar A — 15 Feb 2015
For many years I have watched art house movies on Sunday night. I'm not sure why since most involve abuse, murder or injustice. I have seen movies about dead gay lovers in Peru, Romanian mothers protecting their murderous sons and now this.
As if we didn't have enough Jihadism all over the place, Timbuktu brings a human element that we can feel and relate to. Perhaps none of us will ever experienced anything like what these Malians go through but we can still empathize with their feelings, concerns and sacrifices.
This movie is really about further showcasing the absurdity and immorality of extreme Islam. The hypocrisy, the violence and the impunity. These clowns land where they are not invited and rule the land with guns and steel.
Of course this movie is sad and extremely depressing. It's also very good and I was surprised the theater was reasonably packed. If you like movies that will make your brain work a bit, this one's a winner.
