Review of The Unloved (2009) by Aidan H — 19 May 2011
Although actress-director Morton's intention to de-sensationalise the issue of children in need is commendable, what remains is an aimless and very bland hour-and-three-quarters that feels more like ten.
At its centre is the emotionless visage of its young star Windsor who manages not to yawn throughout the pretentiously long takes and endless wanderings. Visually, its a dismally grey slog, alleviated briefly by some fairground lights and the vibrant performance of Lauren Socha, whose troubled teenager is a breath of fresh air in a overall dramatic vacuum.
While I praise Morton for her desire to paint a blame-free portrait of the issues at hand, her lightness of touch is less than entertaining and the finale, like the rest of the movie, says little and goes nowhere.
Bleak and desperately unsatisfying, this is one directorial debut you may want to leave on its own while you go to the pub. Star for Ms. Socha.
