Review of The Touch of Satan (1971) by Alex D — 03 Sep 2007
Ok, no one is a bigger fan of Mst3k than I am. It will forever be my favorite TV show and 99% of the time the films featured on the series were indeed bad. However The Touch of Satan is one of the few exceptions to this (along with 1976's underrated Squirm).
For a B drive-in horror movie of the early 70's Touch of Satan has quite a bit of rare qualities going for it. The cast is good, the makeup FX above-average, the music score is hauntingly beautiful, and the story itself isn't bad.
Laughlin's direction also lends a lot of moody vibe. It's a film that's certainly not deserving of the grief its gotten for appearing on Mst3k. For those who want gory, action-filled horror - this ain't it.
But it is an atmospheric, brooding little diamond in the rough.
