Review of The Thousand Faces of Dunjia (2017) by Leonard Y — 23 Dec 2017
I'm a fan of both the director and writer/producer of this film so was expecting great things, well, at least a fun ride! I didn't get it. What I got was a convoluted, confusing plot, overwrought, messy CGI and FX, and stereotyped characters more suited to Chinese TV historical soap operas.
The idea was intriguing: an alien race vying for control in ancient China, but, alas, it doesn't seem to have been carefully enough thought through. The film does have its moments, though, just not enough of them! It gets 3 stars from me primarily because of the period sets, which look great and the cinematography is pretty good, too.
The cast do well with what they've got, which isn't much, so a star for effort. Overall, though, somewhat disappointing.
