Review of The Sweatbox (2002) by Tom B — 25 Jul 2012
An extraordinarily candid look at the state of Disney animation in the late 1990s, this documentary details the tumultuous and unpleasant road that eventually led to the creation of THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE.
It's a pretty unflinching depiction of how extremely creative people can disagree to the point of watering down and severely compromising their original visions and intentions. Disney has not made this film publicly/officially available, and it is certainly true that several members of the Disney brass do not come across terribly well, but as a documentation of the struggles inherent in filmmaking (of any sort), and as an honest dissection of how a project can completely fall apart, the film is compelling and fascinating, and should be sought out.
