Review of The Squad (2011) by Todd G — 08 Jun 2012
This movie attempts taut fear-driven paranoia through, but over-extends. Ultimately the audience agrees with the one man that says "there is nothing out there!".
Recovering a high mountain outpost that lost contact days ago, the squad of Columbian soldiers encounter a prisoner that might be a witch or just a guerrilla. After she escapes the fog-bound peak becomes a site of paranoia, power-games and retribution for past grievances. However, the lack of a true external threat is overplayed and the audience gets board watching the solders run around in circles, unable to work together in any manner.
The sound design and photography are very effective, even if the script underplays the pre-existing tensions that might have made this drama more thrilling.
