Review of The Search for General Tso (2014) by Sean H — 18 Jan 2016
This is a film that answers one of those weird questions a lot of us have had: who the hell is General Tso and why does he apparently love spicy chicken? That question is weirdly enough to carry a movie.
That's not to say that's all there is to this movie, far from it, but it is the main query that carries the movie and the ultimate explanation is actually pretty intriguing. Beyond that though, it's a very interesting historical film, a look at the early times of Chinese immigrants to America and the development of Chinese takeout as an American staple.
It's history through the lens of food, and cultural differences through the lens of food. It's an intriguing and well put together documentary that's worth a look if you've ever eaten the titular chicken.
