Review of The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) by Mike I — 13 Mar 2010
What would happen if you took "The Blair Witch Project", "Hostel", and "The Strangers" and put it in a blender on High? You'd get something like "The Poughkeepsie Tapes".
This is only the second movie in a long time to give me a really, creepy feeling. I found a couple of the killer's videos hard to watch - and not just because of the excellent way in which the footage was tweaked to look like it was really on an old, deteriorating video tape.
You know how people will swear they saw "Mother Bates" stab Janet Leigh in the shower when in reality we never see the blade touch her. But we KNEW what was going on, so our minds filled in the blanks. So, while there's not a lot of gore, and a lot of the actual violence is off camera, you see and hear enough to let your mind fill in the blanks, making it even worse than it really was.
