Review of The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (2006) by Abhiram P — 26 Aug 2009
Iconic films as seen through the eyes of a Slovenian psychoanalyst. Who could possibly refuse?
Once you get past the thick accent and the lateral lisp, Zizek should entertain you with his observations on the psychological themes on various revered films and directors. His selections are impeccable, from obvious favourites like The Exorcist and Fight Club to some of my personal favourties like Dead Of Night. There's generous doses of Hitchcock (Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds), Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet) and Chaplin (Great Dictator, City Lights).
Constantly funny, fascinating and original, Zizek's stroke of genius is putting himself inside various famous scenes, so we have him talking to Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix, looking over at Linda Blair's bed in The Exorcist, sitting in Norman Bates' fruit cellar in Psycho, and so on.
Lots of fun for the serious cineaste.
