Review of The Neon Demon (2016) by Keenan S — 13 Apr 2018
The Neon Demon is one of my favorite films of the decade and one of my favorite horror films, coming to us from the director of Drive and Only God Forgives (Both of which I also loved). This time, he takes on Hollywood and the fickle, tricky nature of beauty and its societal standards.
Jesse, a 16-year-old girl, comes to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of becoming a model. Though she has a bit of a slow start, she eventually finds her footing with the modeling industry thanks to her natural beauty, which draws the ire and envy of other women who seek to have her youth and vitality.
Lit in neon, atmospheric and creepy, dreamlike in its imagery, uncomfortable, lurid in sexual content, and dripping with blood in its crazed finale, The Neon Demon is a glorious horror film. If you're up for weirder, off-kilter horror films, The Neon Demon will be right up your alley.
