Review of The Monkey's Paw (2013) by Dc E — 13 Aug 2014
"The Monkey's Paw" 10 Scale Rating: 3.5 (Bad) ...
The Good: Loosely based on the 1902 short story by W.W. Jacobs, the premise isn't a bad one. The first 20 minutes or so are interesting and provide a solid setup. Stephen Lang turned in a solid performance as the film's main antagonist and seemed to have fun doing so. I overlooked a lot for this film because it is indeed a B grade horror film.
The Bad: ... but I can only overlook so much. Aside from Lang, the acting was horrible ... even for a low grade horror movie. The film was also mostly boring and drab. I didn't seem to care too much about any of the characters and the ending was simple and not well thought out. Lastly, and most importantly, the movie lacks any real scary moments. In fact, the director didn't seem to even make many ATTEMPTS at horror scenes and the film plays more like a bad drama with gore elements to it.
