Review of The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) by Bob K — 14 Sep 2018
The teaching at the Christian Life anti-gay camp, or whatever it's called, is sometimes portrayed as farcical, and played for a laugh. But Jennifer Ehle is not joking around, and is one of the most sinister characters you'll see this year. Her brother is a bit more hapless and human, but he's performing service in this awful place which is a travesty. There's a line near the end when Chloe Grace Moretz emphatically decries the emotional abuse in teaching kids to hate themselves, and considering where I was watching this film (funky theatre in Oakland), I'm surprised that no one hooted their approval. I almost did.
This movie is based on a YA novel, but anyone taking a youngster should be aware that something pretty awful happens to one boy, which really seemed inevitable, and although nothing is shown, it's shocking.
