Zombie delivers a smooth scare with notes of Kubrick's "The Shining" carrying it the whole way. I mean this as the utmost compliment. For a guy who has grown weary of the Jesus conquers evil trope in religious horror, this film was a fresh take that was more truthful to the human condition than most films of said category.
Fear of addiction, conception, and religious fanaticism. This is where the horror comes from here.
