Review of The Lifeguard (2013) by Jiana W — 04 Jul 2014
A fairly joyless and melancholy movie. Even the teenagers here, who are supposed to sort of be Leigh's form of escape from reality, have problems. No one is really carefree. Her relationship with Jason becomes sketchy. I could have forgiven it if he was, say, 18 or just about to become 18 within the movie (as in they show him having a birthday celebration.) Nope. Jason is ABOUT to be a high school senior when he meets Leigh. Pretty unacceptable, even if he is knowledgeable, willing, and old enough to make such a decision. If roles were reversed, and Leigh was a 29 year old man while Jason was a 16 year old girl, then things would be extremely different in how people view this. It's never "OK" in the movie that they are sleeping together but it doesn't even blow up the way it should. Leigh escapes relatively unscathed by her irresponsible behavior.
An okay movie that could have been so much more. And could've been way funnier and more engaging as well.
