Review of The House on Telegraph Hill (1951) by Doug C — 03 Dec 2009
A semi-gothic psychological suspense noir in the style of The Spiral Staircase, with excellent cinematography but a bit convoluted and slow in places. Valentina Cortesa plays a woman who assumes the identity of a friend she knew in a German concentration camp in order to immigrate to America.
She then travels to San Francisco where she inherits a house atop Telegraph Hill as a result of her assumed identity, but fears the estate's trustee, played by Richard Basehart, and the long-time governess of the son she has assumed with her new identity.
Good film about paranoia in the noir style.
