Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Colin B — 22 Feb 2016
I really liked this movie. Subtle and smart, and sufficiently tense and creepy. I don't think there's anything particularly unique about this movie, other than it hits all the right notes in exactly the right way. It's a bit of a slow-burner, but if you engage yourself than I think the movie will reward you for it.
The people ripping hard on this movie are the type of folk who can't sit in the dark and just immerse themselves in the movie without flashes of action/gore to keep them interested. It seems like a lot of reviewers here just can't stomach slow horror movies. In my opinion, they are always the best. I thought the payoff, although somewhat predictable, was incredibly well done. The scene where she's walking up the stairs towards the attic, and then cowering in the corner as the door opened slowly, had me glued to the screen and shivering, and I'm a complete horror movie junkie. Atmospheric, slow and subtle, but incredibly effective.
