Review of The Home Song Stories (2007) by Daniel T — 31 Jan 2008
What I like: Joan Chen's magnificent performance rose above the part, which came dangerously close to another racial stereotype of an sexually manipulative and emotionally vulnerable Chinese songstress longing for love (In fact, the performances are good all round, including QiYuWu, who has the stock caddish hunk of a non-role, but transformed it into something quite tender and endearing.
) What I don't like: the hesitant, clipped way in which the Chinese immigrants spoke sounded calculated and superficial. The narration (always such a convenient, overused device) doesnt work for me.
And yet another melancholic songstress singing "Bu Liao Qing" in a movie - you'd think there are more than one classic Chinese song that's ever been written than movies would have you believe.
