Review of The Final Year (2018) by Xiaolong Q — 20 Jan 2018
The scene where Samantha Powers gathers a bunch of female ambassadors and Madeline Albright to watch the 2016 election results assured of a Clinton victory is the most disturbing horror movie of 2018.
I had to watch through my fingers.
Beyond that, I was left with the feeling that 'The Final Year' might have been better served as a TV miniseries with each episode focused on a different foreign policy topic. The film's brief running length only allows for a quick touching of each area and in the end none of them feel fully extrapolated nor do the brief summaries add up to much of a powerful whole.
There are fascinating moments here and surely even more on the cutting room floor. I just don't think this was the best vehicle to deliver them in.
