Review of The Evil Dead (1981) by Tazio G — 05 Apr 2013
Ash: You bastards, why are you torturing me like this? Why?
"Can They Be Stopped?".
Sam Raimi's debut, "The Evil Dead", really laid down the foundation what you could do with such a minimal budget. You don't need flashy special effects and dumb jump scares to make a horror movie. Raimi creates an effectively creepy atmosphere through his wild cinematography and the violence makes it even more unsettling all done practically. Decapitations, blood spurting everywhere, stabbings are the basics of the movie. There's a reason the movie is NC-17 with moments like the infamous tree rape scene. Bruce Campbell "Ash", starts to progress from a wimpy character to an eventual badass we would see in the Evil Dead 2. This is a true cult classic that deserves to be loved with all of its charm and cheapness. My favorite horror movie.
