Review of The Day Mars Invaded Earth (1963) by John S — 02 Sep 2016
Very mixed feelings here. They handled their extremely low budget extremely well by trapping the characters in one place and by not using cheesy props. However, the characters are so "stock" as to be almost comic - and I'm curious, was there some law that stated that every teen-aged daughter in '60s Sci-Fi MUST be named "Judy"? (the got fancy here by spelling it "Judie", but still.
..). They were able to create a certain amount of suspense, but the method by which the characters become trapped is so easily solved and so surmountable as to make the situation preposterous. The final two scenes do give a bit of a chill, but they're both completely expected.
Amazingly, the acting is not awful, and the leads make the technobabble sound fairly reasonable.
