Review of The Counselor (2013) by Robbie T — 09 Oct 2015
One of Ridley Scott's bleakest, most bold and thrilling films he's ever done. The dialogue can be tedious and too philosophical for those who are looking for sheer visceral thrills, and frankly, it is not an emotionally gratifying film.
It is frustratingly dark and often depressing to watch. It doesn't have the kind of rewatchability that many stellar crime thrillers have. But Scott never loses his flair for creating polished visuals, and its talented cast brings their best to this immeasurably dark tale of greed, death, and human instincts.
The Counselor is not for everyone, and there are so many moments in the film where I started to feel really down (again, it really is not a cheerful film). But it is entertaining in ways that today's mainstream Hollywood films rarely are, and the last 30 minutes of the film is gripping and truly traumatizing.
It may be a disappointing film, but certainly not a bad movie.
