Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Brad B — 19 Dec 2009
Spielberg treatment of this book is just a well crafted piece of cinema story telling. A movie that Hollywood completely snubbed. Excellent acting throughout. This movie made a star of Whoopi Goldberg. Even Oprah turns in a credible performance!
An ending that could make even a hard ass like me get all watery eyed.Quickly becoming a gone but not forgotten gem!
Easily the best movie of 1985! I often use this example among others to show how ridiculous the Academy Awards are, I mean this movie was beaten out for best picture of 1985 by Out Of Africa which was a quite forgettable soap opera that doesn't even come close to this flick in terms of acting and story!I cam still recall the shock that ripple through press when this movie didn't win! The critic's were appalled!
