Review of The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) by David G — 20 Dec 2016
With the broad scope, crackpot mythology and vast collection of bizarre characters, locations, races, religions and scenery, it's not hard to see why The Chronicles of Riddick was panned by critics and fans alike upon release back in 2004, after all it's as jarringly different from the beautiful simplicity of Pitch Black as can be.
I think however the years have been kind to it and while the story remains so-so and the characters hit and miss, a fresh perspective allows one to appreciate the huge amount of imagination on display and admire the fantastic production design and special effects.
Director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel (the latter's passion for the character of Riddick and the universe he inhabits is well-documented) may have been overambitious but credit where credit's due.
The film may not be in the same pulp sci-fi/fantasy league as Dune but it's my hope that one day it receives some kind of cult recognition.
