Review of The Childhood of a Leader (2016) by Peter F — 25 Jul 2016
The directorial debut from screen actor Brady Corbet is an articulate and carefully sculpted film, but also one that isn't quite as menacing as it strives to be. It approaches its material with aplomb, and who wouldn't with the talent that Corbet enlisted here.
The film features stirring cinematography from Lol Crawley, and the score composed by Scott Walker is fantastic (there's a reason his name is highlighted on the poster), and their presence alone may be enough for some critics to augment their ratings for it.
Sadly, Corbet's dramatic tricks are just too obvious to be truly effective, and the "big reveal" doesn't live up to the film's pervasive tension. Still, Childhood of a Leader introduces Corbet as an ambitious director, and hopefully his future projects will be beyond their preconceived notions.
