Review of The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932) by Jeff B — 22 Mar 2011
Somewhat interesting, but then again, somewhat hokey story of a woman taken hostage by a ruthless General for his bidding. The General is quite dispicable, but falls in love with him anyways. This has a curious King and I feel to it, even though the first version of Anna and the King didn't hit the screen until 1946.
Hell, Margaret Landon didn't come out with the book until 1944. So I wonder what the circumstances of this movie were made. Stanwyck is great as usual in a bit of a do-nothing part, and Nils Asher, through the pounds of Asian makeup, is somewhat convicing, but you can tell it's the white-man-playing-chinese shtick.
Not a bad movie if you can get by the stereotyping.
