Review of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) by Ben S — 25 Mar 2009
Probably one of the better entries in the Holmes franchise, but Conan-Doyle purists will have a lot to balk at - the dithering Nigel Bruce playing Watson as strictly comedy relief being the most outrageous example.
More of a crimefighter than a sleuth, Rathbone is quite good, but Ida Lupino plays against type as a Victorian damsel in distress. Lots of holes in the plot too - but overall, it's enjoyable enough.
