Review of The Act of Killing (2012) by David L — 05 Apr 2014
In the 1965-1966 Indonesian massacre, more than 500,000 people were killed (mostly ethnic Chinese). The western countries (even the Communist Chinese government) basically ignored this massacre. In this documentary, Joshua Oppenheimer achieved something seemed impossible: Let the killers tell the story of the killing.
And the killers, who were so proud of the torturing and killing, gathered all his eager-to-be-a-movie-star gangster friends, showed the darkest evil in the plain human faces. It is a movie so cruel and so hard to swallow, but it is truly a masterpiece.
