Review of That Evening Sun (2009) by Eric B — 10 Oct 2010
There's a special place in my heart for this kind of film. This kind of film probably has no budget, no hand-of-god producers, no promotional clout, and yet, the filmmakers still do an excellent job in bringing the story comes to life. Sometimes, all a story needs are three-dimensional characters and well-motivated dialogue.
This story keeps it very simple and very American: An old man refuses to live in a retirement home, so he escapes and returns to his farm, only to find it has been rented out by his son to a white trash family. He stubbornly lives in the 'slave quarters', annoying his neighbor. Sounds like a tragic ending about to happen.
I love a story which uses a modern setting to tell age-old themes. This one is about working hard to own a piece of land, and keeping it at all costs. Very colonialistic, very American.
