Review of Tetro (2009) by Sandrine D — 13 Jan 2010
Simply put: it's Coppola's best film in almost twenty years. It may not be a masterpiece but it's wonderful to see him make an intimate character drama. Huge kudos must go to Walter Murch, who adds some brilliant editing choices and thrilling sound design effects.
Also, Gallo brings a strong performance that is extremely watchable (his younger Brother co-star is also great). What starts as an independent character study, transforms into an operatic and cinematic passion play.
At times profound, elsewhere contrived. Still, well worth checking out. The black and white cinematography is stunningly beautiful. (It also makes a fine companion piece to Rumble Fish - again siblings.
) In the end, I hope Coppola makes a few more movies on this scale. Whether it's The Conversation or Tetro, I love his intimate side.
