Review of Tampopo (1985) by Hunter S — 05 Aug 2007
The world's first (only?) noodle western, with overtones of Shane in amongst all the knowing cowboy cliches. It's a Warm, affectionate, funny and evocative look at a culture and a way of thinking; and not just about food.
Truck driver Goro and happens upon the Lai Lai noodle bar and, after a fight and some bad noodles, vows to help the widowed Tampopo make the last word in noodle soup, with the help of some friends.
In the meantime we see snippets of food and the role it plays in daily life, from the status obsessed salrymen at lunch to a family's last meal together. These little vignettes are at turns funny, touching, sexy, surprising; sometimes all of them.
A hymn to the sensual pleasures of gastronomy.
