Review of Syriana (2005) by Boisramé M — 01 Sep 2009
My favorite movie of all-time. A courageous, disturbing, and super-intelligent exploration of the oil industry and its enormous sociopolitical impact. So many films of this type fall flat--too preachy, too stupid--but not this.
It's balanced, yet biting. The characters are not portrayed as heroes and villains, but rather pawns. Be it a CIA agent, a Mideast terrorist, or a Texas oil tycoon, every individual in Syriana is a flawed part of a system more complex and dangerous than any one person.
The performances, from a lavish ensemble cast including George Clooney (who won an Academy Award for his performance), Matt Damon, William Hurt, Amanda Peet, Christopher Plummer, and Jeffrey Wright, are terrific.
No one aims to steal the spotlight; rather, they deliver lived-in, understated performances which ring true and blend easily into the overall tapestry.
