Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Daniel M — 28 Apr 2010
First of a brilliant trilogy from Chan Wook Park (Oldboy, JSA, Lady Vengeance) It plays much better as a hard boiled thriller more than a straight up revenge flick. The undertones of themes such as love, devotion, loyalty, and desire are apart of what makes this film so much more than a simple revenge from point a to point b story.
Chan Wook Park is easily one of the finest film makers in the world at the moment. Much more experimental than oldboy, in how many films do you see a deaf mute as the protagonist? A little bit slower paced yet done deliberately it reminded me of the feeling I got after watching Taxi Driver for the first time.
Simple put a great film check it out.
