Review of Swing Kids (1993) by Tory K — 13 Feb 2008
This film spits in the face of every convention and formula that a film snob (like myself) has come to expect. What begins as a trite pubescent story of eager youth turns into a frantic quest for identity and meaning in a world that appears to have lost it.
Every time this film offers up something a film lover expects, it changes the rules and whips understanding of convention. I sat down to the film expecting a sociological analog of "footloose" but was pleasantly surprised to discover a unique, horrifying, and illuminating film experience.
A rare gem.
