Review of Sweet Sixteen (2002) by Andrew C — 09 Aug 2006
One of Loach's best. After seeing this and Wind That Shakes The Barley I really need to hunt down all his work. Martin Compston gives an excellent performance as the lead and the supporting cast are all pretty decent.
I did have to watch it in subtitles though because of the harsh scottish accent. One feels angry and sorry for the poor kid, a victim of circumstance. Why we ask, are these people forgotten by society, left without hope and with no other option but a life of criminality? An important but tragic film which is livened by some great humour.
