Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Steve S — 12 Jun 2007
I suppose some people don't have regrets, even secret ones, and so they don't feel anything when watching this movie. So be it. I don't think I've ever seen a movie more accurately illustrate and recreate the pain we inflict upon ourselves when we let our own ego and hubris destroy our happiness.
In one violently heartbreaking moment, Emmet Ray (Sean Penn) realizes he has done this to himself, repeating the only thing one can say at such a moment. With apologies to Jack Nickolson, this movie makes me want to be a better person.
Samantha Morton is simply perfect in this movie. Absolutely one of my favorites of all time.
