Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982) by Jessica W — 07 May 2008

Okay, cinematically, it's not that pretty. It's filmed a la Mary Martin's Peter Pan--that's right, you get to see the stage. But the performances are fantastic! Angela Lansbury steals the show as Mrs. Nellie Lovett. And George Hearn as the title character is the perfect mixture of dark and dork.

I heartily recommend it, especially if you want to see the musical, but don't think you can stand the buckets of blood as seen in Burton's version.
