Review of Suzhou River (2000) by Espen N — 12 Jul 2007
A surprisingly involving film about loneliness, duality of identity, and romantic fatalism on each side of a river in urban Shanghai. I absolutely loved the narration and freewheeling storytelling of the film concerning a lonesome videographer who thinks about a girl he fell in love with, but suddenly disappeared.
It's such a subjective film, without any superficial feel to it. I also liked the mysterious events that happens as Mardar, a motorcycle courier who does deliveries all over the city, gets a somewhat strange girl to transport.
This film is a treat, something different and left me in awe with open eyes.
