Review of SuperFly (2018) by Patrice P — 15 Jun 2018
This was a well-written, exciting, and well-paced film that does not deserve the low critic reviews it is getting. We glorify more poorly written and acted white gangster movies all the time. In comparison to this movie, Ocean's 8 with its buoy from the Me Too movement is a joke.
Like it or not, this film aptly represented a very unfortunate yet existent element of black subculture. It also does not hurt that Superfly is freaking beautiful. With the exception of the way over the top threesome, the film was very good.
I don't condone the drug hustle but this film, like Scarface, gives an entertaining but still terrifying look into that world with good acting, great action, and some humor. The white imposition of the blaxploitation label really unnecessary hurt this film.
