Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Jonathan Y — 30 Nov 2008
Takashi Miike, Japan's own weirdo hybrid of Tarantino, Kurosawa and Herschell Gordon Lewis, dishes up a spicy platter of Sukiyaki-flavored spaghetti in this delightfully oddball (and wickedly entertaining) bit of self-conscious movie geek wankery.
Set in some kind of cartoonish Leone-esque alternate universe where Japanese samurai swords mingle freely with Smith and Wesson shootin' irons, Miike's 'Django' would probably be insufferably smug if it wasn't also so full of unpretentious joi de vivre at the sheer spectacular magic of moviemaking.
