Review of Sudden Death (1995) by Robin W — 11 May 2008
Along with "Hard Target", this is easily my favourite Jean-Claude Van Damme film, as any movie that does the "Die Hard" formula at Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals can do no wrong in my eyes.
Skillfully directed by the always-reliable Peter Hyams, this clearly doesn't take its ludicrous story too seriously and often proves so by going as ridiculously over-the-top as humanly possible - and even you don't get into the action, the film does have one hell of a kick-ass hockey game taking place in the background! Highlights of absurdity include JCVD's kitchen fight with a terrorist dressed as the Pittsburgh Penguins mascot, and his attempts to hide from the bad guys by disguising himself as the Penguins goalie - where he winds up on the ice, making a key save in the game!
