Review of Submarino (2010) by A. G — 13 Dec 2010
No pre-processed social drama, Submarino gives the cold shoulder to two Danish brothers. The sorry duo drifted apart at youth and went on different, downward spiraling paths in life. Tragic childhood events lead one to seek relief from drugs and hamper the other with anger issues and a low perception of self-worth. The story is unveiled in short fragments.
Barring a few awkward twists, Submarino is a psychologically strong and realistic performance. The brothers are solid characters whose story is further accentuated by almost absurdly twisted and tragic supporting roles. It's an infectiously melancholic movie overall to the point of being hard to enjoy. The social accuracy makes up for much.
