Ugh. This isn't a star wars movie, wasn't suppose to be. I wish people could separate their scifi and not compare them to something it just isn't. You can't also compare it to the tv show because the mythologies and theories are different and yet with the same basic characters.
The tv series went on a different direction that the movie originally had intended. I love both equally. I own this movie and watch it all the time even next to the tv series. It just really shows what an average crew would do if something were to happen on another world and how people would interact with each other even if they don't understand each other's languages.
