Review of Spring in a Small Town (1948) by Mattias E — 28 Feb 2010
Atmospheric, tense and intimate, Fei Mu's Xiao cheng zhi chun became a major source of inspiration for the fifth generation of Chinese directors in the eighties. The drama of the narrative is further enhanced by deep symbolism and lighting effects.
The dilemma of the love triangle is never reduced to mere eroticism, but presented mainly as an ethical problem. Fei Mu sadly soon disappeared into oblivion, but the charismatic actress Wei Wei went on to have a successful acting carreer starring in numerous classic Hong Kong movies.
