Review of Spartan (2004) by Jerry K — 02 Jul 2008
I love all of Mamet's movies, I'm a fanboy. But this movie contains some of his best dialog, and the story is a great twist on the typical spy thriller.
I can't say enough good things about this movie, Val Kilmer is perfect in the role (why the hell isn't he more famous!?), Mamet's direction (which is usually stilted, I'll admit) is great.
I saw this in an empty theater with my dad the weekend it came out, and it was gone a week later. It is, in my opinion, one of the most shrewdly crafted thrillers in recent years; it is criminally under-seen and under-appreciated.
David Mamet isn't for everyone, but this is the prefect film with which to familiarize yourself with his work. I love it.
