Review of Sonatine (1993) by Garland H — 09 Jul 2007
Great, straight forward Yakuza movie...incredibly Japanese. In every single possible way. Read a bunch of Yukio Mishima and the Hagakure...maybe even "musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa and rent a bunch of other Yak films before watching this and it'll be more suitable for a Western pallette.
Everbody else's review's are quite fitting- haunting and heartbreaking, simple, and "beautifully methodical classical composition and pacing". "Brother" is a better choice for beginners to the genre.
..but this one is the real deal, falling only perhaps to "Sympathy for the Underdog" or a few other more obscure titles such as "The Yakuza Papers".
