Review of Sonatine (1993) by David S — 15 Aug 2008
There's ice cream and drinks on the bus picking up a group of gangsters in town to mediate a truce between to rival gangs. When one gangster is offered a drink from another gangster, he replies "My stomach still hurts from when you stabbed me.".
Sonatine sees its gangsters as violent overgrown kids on a field trip. Kitano himself plays the most overgrown kid of them all, tiring of the playing the gangster games but not so tired of playing kid games with his men.
The film is slow and methodical and deadpan hilarious. After seeing two of his films (this and The Blind Swordsman), Kitano is fast becoming one of my favorites.
